Work – Life Balance

In today’s corporate world, striking a balance between work and personal life is of utmost importance. There are many stories around us about IT workers having a burn out, health issues, family breakups etc… owing to bad lifestyle and stressful conditions at work.

In a way, we are good at multi-tasking at work but fail miserably when it comes to personal upkeep and family time spent.  However, we need to understand that work life balance is different and unique for each one of us. Spending 14-16, hrs at work is the right balance for some whereas may be spending 6-8 hrs at work is the right balance for few others. It is always contextual and needs to be understood depending on what stage of Maslow’s hierarchy one is at! Are you looking at satisfying just basic needs or emotional needs more is what defines your work life balance!

Success is Multi-Dimensional by Nature

When you are looking to satisfying your emotional needs, we need to understand that Success is a multi-dimensional attribute.

A great career and hefty salary does not guarantee all round emotional satisfaction. We need to satisfy our marriage / family to keep up the work drive.

This means that you need to spend time with your family and be aware to keep away intrusions. Your private time with the family must not be invaded by your work emails, Facebook chats, WhatsApp messages and phone calls.  Do not carry your work home unless you have spent dedicated time to care of the family needs

Personal Health is Supreme

Health is Wealth. So do not compromise on your daily workouts and diet restrictions. Sometimes it can be overwhelming at work that we might lose track of calories we consumed on a day. So keep tab of it. Also, dedicate specific time of the day to have a long stroll or basic workouts in your gym or play a cricket game. A fit body leads to an active mind that can work towards set goals.

Finally, bring in more discipline

Managing time comes with discipline and constant practice. Make it a habit to stick to your routine on a regular basis and avoid procrastination. The more you delay taking care of different dimensions for well-being the lesser is the chance that you would be able to do course correction and face the negative consequences.
