Whenever you think of job change remember the words of Mr. Narayana Murthy (Founder, Infosys) who advised to love your job and not the company you work for!
Broadly there could be several reasons why you want to quit a job or switch jobs. Some key reasons below:
1. You feel dreaded to get to work– Your boss/manager is not cooperating and does not make you feel comfortable. If this is the case then see if you can overcome by reaching out to other leaders/HR in your organization and try to resolve it but if nothing works, experience shows that it is better to quit the company you work for and not spoil your career because in such uncomfortable work place there can be no room for creativity or career growth. To sum it up if the answer to these questions is a big “NO” then it’s time to switch jobs.
• Do you like the people you work with?
• Are you appreciated for the work you do?
• Do you feel good/feel safe to get to work daily?
2. You’re bored at work – Maybe you’ve been in your position for several years and you’re just not excited anymore about the work you’re doing. Try to get a job rotation done and see if you can move into a better role. Most of the companies today have this Job rotation policy. Still if it doesn’t work and if you’re not growing in your job then it’s time to make a calculated move to improve your career and make it more engaging
3. Technology Obsolesce – Technology has had a dramatic impact on almost every industry, and if it’s affecting your job, you need to fill the gap by acquiring new skills that you need to be successful in doing your work. Try to fill that gap by attending Learning programs / certifications/boot camps that can help you acquire new skills and help keep you up to date. If nothing works may be its time to switch your career with something that you know well rather than switching jobs within the same industry which might not help much
Ensure that unless you do not get convincing answers for the questions below do not switch jobs in haste!
Is the job change in line with your values, interests, and skills? In other words
a) What do you want to do?
b) How will your next job be different from what you’re doing now?
c) What are the possibilities that you will have a better work culture in your next job?
