According to the author, Managers work to get their employees to do what they did yesterday, but a little
faster and a little cheaper.
Leaders the author feels on the other hand, know where they’d like to go, but understand that they can’t get
there without their tribe, without giving those they lead the tools to make something happen.
Leaders are the ones that create the conditions where people choose new actions.
The choices are voluntary. They’re made by people who see a new landscape, new opportunities and new
options. You can’t make people change. But you can create an environment where they choose to.
Managers want authority. Leaders take responsibility.
The author feels that we need both for sure. But he cautions us to be careful not to confuse them. And it
helps to remember that leaders are scarce and thus more valuable.
