Folly of rewarding A while Hoping for B

We have to be really careful about what we hope for and what are we rewarding as a team.

Look at the scenario below.

EXPECTING:
• Long-term growth
• Teamwork
• Stretch goals
• Total quality
• Innovative thinking and risk-taking
• Candor; surfacing bad news early

So, it is really important to reward the team members basis the following.

• Recognize the rewards people value!
• Communicate!
• Strive for equity in the long term!

How do we address the Folly A/B
 Understand what behaviours you are rewarding!
 Reward systems should reinforce desired behaviours!
 Alter the reward system!

More importantly, we should avoid a scenario for any team member where “A single mistake for
which team member being blamed can offset many successes and result in him/her being labelled and
limited in future assignments and promotions”
